THE IMPORTANCE OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION IN EARLY CHILDHOOD

September 4, 2026

Physical education in early childhood plays a crucial role in the development of a child’s physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing. Through sport and physical-based activities, it facilitates spaces for children to learn key motor skills, build confidence, and create a sense of belonging with their peers.

At Heritage House Early Education Centres, we understand that physical education is an essential space for children to learn about their environment, their peers, but most importantly, about themselves.

It teaches children new capabilities within their bodies and supports cognitive development, creating space for the growth of children’s intelligence, physical development, and emotional regulation.

In this blog, we will delve deeper into understanding the benefits of physical activity and education in early childhood.

What Is Physical Education (P.E)?

According to UNESCO’s definition, physical education is understood as “an area of the school curriculum concerned with human movement, physical fitness and health”.

Within this structured setting, it not only focuses on the development of a child’s competence in physical movement but also teaches them to engage in physical activity safely. These lessons, especially in early childhood, create the fundamentals for their lifelong engagement in physical activity and exercise.

Supports Physical Health

Engaging children in sport-based physical activities supports healthy muscle growth, muscle control, and bone strength. It also supports healthy cardiovascular and metabolic function and greatly reduces the risk of diabetes and obesity.

Boosts Cognitive Health

Physical education significantly boosts children’s cognitive intelligence and health. Research shows that regular physical activity increases blood flow and oxygen delivery to the brain and increases neural activity.

Therefore, regular physical activity remarkably improves a child’s ability to memorise, focus, and self-regulate. It also helps them develop in their cognitive flexibility, allowing them to learn the foundations of:

  • Multitasking
  • Problem-solving
  • Planning
  • Organisational skills

Grow Emotional Intelligence

As children take part in team sports and group activities, it builds their emotional intelligence. Understanding the values of sportsmanship, communication, and respect, while learning to navigate challenges, teaches them to manage their emotions and build resilience.

It also helps them learn to cooperate with others and recognise other children’s strengths, skills, and emotions, allowing them to build empathy and understanding for their peers.

Build Social Skills and Confidence

Through continuous practice and improvement, physical education helps children gain confidence and boost their self-esteem. It also creates a space for children to develop their social skills by making friends, learning to resolve conflicts, gaining independence, and understanding leadership.

Motor Skills Development

All forms of sports, exercises, and physical movement play a fundamental role in developing a child’s motor skills. It provides opportunities for children to be exposed to a variety of experiences that engage their gross motor skills, such as running and jumping, as well as develop their fine motor skills, such as hand-eye coordination and throwing.

The repetition of children learning these techniques promotes motor skill competence, allowing them to develop strong movement skills and become better equipped to learn more, explore, and adopt a more confident outlook on life.

Physical Education at Heritage House

Overall, physical education is a valuable and essential part of building a successful quality of life and wellbeing for children. At Heritage House, we have implemented these foundational spaces through our Heritage House Sports Club.

Through our experienced educators, we foster a positive environment where children can safely learn key physical and sporting skills, allowing them to thrive in all their physical activity endeavours. The Heritage House Sports Club curriculum also aligns with the principles of the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) and encourages children to thrive by developing communication skills, self-confidence and a positive wellbeing

Through our program, we help children build a positive relationship with physical activity, offering a variety of sports that combine mind, body, and character development, providing the physical activity needed to develop your child’s all-around psychomotor skills.
