THE IMPORTANCE OF STEAM IN EARLY LEARNING

June 3, 2025

STEAM education is vital for helping children understand the ever-changing world around them. It encompasses five key areas of learning: Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics.

At Heritage House Childcare & Early Learning Centres, our curriculum introduces children to the fundamental teachings of STEAM using real-world applications. These teachings are essential for developing critical thinking skills and cultivating a lifelong love of learning.

In this blog, we will explore the many benefits of STEAM education, equipping today’s young children with the necessary skills for tomorrow.

Promotes a Growth Mindset

People with a growth mindset understand that their abilities can be developed through hard work and dedication over time. When this mindset is implemented in children, they can recognise that challenges are simply a part of the learning journey.

STEAM requires exploration and the ability to adapt to new strategies. These skills help children become more comfortable with learning new things, not just in a childcare setting but in all aspects of life. With a growth mindset, children can confidently engage in trial and error during STEAM experiments, even when faced with setbacks.

Develops Problem-Solving Skills

Introducing children to scientific and mathematical challenges allows them to develop a systematic approach to problem-solving. This involves breaking down a problem into small parts, analysing the situation and deciding the best solution. STEAM education helps children make decisions by processing information effectively and understanding the concept of cause and effect.

Nurtures Creativity

Originally known as STEM, STEAM now encompasses Art as a core subject. This recent addition promotes creative exploration and encourages children to think outside the box during complex challenges. Nurturing creativity enables children to use their imagination in all areas of learning, allowing them to consider different perspectives and utilise tools and materials in innovative ways.

Encourages Collaboration and Communication

Group projects are a key component of STEAM education. During these tasks, children learn to share ideas, work together and respectfully consider other perspectives. Teamwork helps children become more comfortable with listening to others, showing empathy and expressing themselves.

STEAM activities often involve experimenting with new tools and materials. This form of play introduces children to a wide range of new words and phrases. Having an extensive vocabulary enables children to express their opinions, thoughts, and emotions effectively. STEAM’s combination of different disciplines helps children communicate their ideas in many mediums, not just through speech.

Builds Confidence

The disciplines associated with STEAM are not only fun and thought-provoking, but they also help children build confidence in themselves and their abilities. When they use tools for the first time, such as a spoon to stir ingredients or scissors to cut paper, children learn to accomplish tasks independently. These tasks also improve their fine and gross motor skills. If a child has high self-esteem and is confident in their abilities, it also means they are comfortable asking for help when needed.
