WHY COMMUNITY EVENTS STRENGTHEN EARLY EDUCATION

October 9, 2026

Having a community is an important part of people’s lives. It provides a sense of belonging and can help people feel less lonely. For children, community is a little different; they are typically exposed only to their immediate family and friends, which can sometimes limit their experience of the real world.

At Heritage House Early Education, we pride ourselves on hosting regular community events and experiences that our children can participate in. This blog highlights the importance of community partnerships and how Heritage House connects with local businesses to immerse your child in their neighbourhood.

Importance of Community

Teamwork

By learning to connect with their peers, children can build lasting friendships and develop a deeper sense of belonging. True teamwork between classmates teaches children how to share, expands their problem-solving skills, and sharpens their creative thinking.

Communication

Skills such as listening, verbal and non-verbal communication help children initiate conversations, express themselves, and respond to others. Engaging with the local community provides children with meaningful opportunities to develop these skills, build confidence, and express their ideas, opinions and perspectives.

Responsibility

Responsibility can help children understand the importance of looking after someone or something. It can simply include putting toys away after playing with them or listening when an educator is talking. Immersing children in local community experiences can further develop their sense of responsibility, independence and confidence, supporting a positive transition into their future school years.

New Experiences

The abundance of activities and events provides children with new experiences that can help spark their curiosity and expand their worldview. Additionally, these experiences help children understand important real-world topics including hospitality, road safety, animal care, medical care, and so much more.

Our Community Connections

Café and Restaurant Visits

Introducing children to nearby cafés and restaurants helps them build social skills and an understanding of etiquette. During this time, children learn how people interact and converse outside the home. It teaches them patience as they wait for food, the freedom to choose what they would like to eat or drink, and manners when ordering. When children order their food and drinks, they learn early numeracy skills as they pay for items and handle their own cash.

Local Shops and Libraries

Visiting these locations is a great way to support their early learning in the real world. These experiences help children learn about money, how to communicate with shopkeepers, and how to make decisions. When they visit local libraries, children have access to a wide range of books and enjoy interactive storytime sessions read by educators or librarians. They also learn about sharing, borrowing, and later returning books, and have a chance to communicate with their peers in a safe, shared space.

First Responders Workshops

Heritage House invites first responders, such as police officers, firefighters and paramedics, to speak to our children and help them understand what is involved in each of their roles. Through these workshops, children learn that first responders are here to protect them, their families and friends. This familiarity reduces uncertainty and can help educate children, making the next time they encounter sirens or speeding emergency vehicles less scary.

Healthy Harold

The beloved giraffe, Healthy Harold, is a frequent visitor at Heritage House. This special guest teaches our children about health, sun, water, bike and road safety. His interactive workshops also help children understand the importance of healthy foods, a nutritious diet, and regular physical activity. A fun-loving puppet can soften the tone for children and serve as a kind, caring friend.

Dental Workshops

Going to the dentist is so important for growing teeth. At Heritage House, dental professionals often stop by to provide free dental checkups to all the children. Here, our young learners can learn how to maintain good dental hygiene. There can be a stigma around visiting the dentist, which may make dental appointments feel intimidating for some children. By introducing children to dental professionals from a young age at Heritage House, they can become familiar and comfortable with the experience, helping to build positive associations and confidence around visiting the dentist in the future.

Community Strength at Heritage House

At Heritage House Early Education, learning extends beyond the classroom as we immerse our children in a range of community experiences and events throughout the year. These opportunities allow children to explore, interact and participate alongside members of their local community, building confidence, social skills and a greater understanding of the world around them.

Our experienced educators introduce children to different cultures, cafés, restaurants, shops and libraries, helping them build confidence and independence. The Heritage House curriculum also aligns with the principles of the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) and encourages children to develop communication skills and self-confidence.
