MAKING THE RIGHT CHOICE FOR YOUR CHILD’S SCHOOL STARTING AGE

October 5, 2023

Choosing when to send your child to school is a significant decision for every parent. At Heritage House Childcare & Early Learning Centres, we understand that navigating the school starting age structure can be confusing. We want to help you make an informed decision that best suits your child’s needs and development. Today, we’re going to delve into the options available to parents and why it’s crucial to consider your child’s emotional and social maturity when making this choice.

Some children may not be developmentally ready for the academic and social demands of Kindergarten. Holding them back can provide them with extra time to mature physically, emotionally, and cognitively. There are many benefits of play in early childhood education. It would be counterintuitive to attempt to hasten formal education by taking children out of the environment where they learn best.

Making The Right Choice For Your Child's School Starting Age

Understanding the School Starting Age Window

The current school starting age structure provides a 19-month window for enrolling students in their first year of school. In NSW all children must turn 6-years-old in Primary School. For parents with children born from July 1 to December 31, the choice is clear-cut. Their child will start school at the age of 5 and turn 6 during their first year of formal education.

However, for parents with children born from January 1 to July 31, there’s a choice to be made. They can either send their 5-year-old, who will turn 6 during their Kindergarten year, or opt to send their 4-year-old, who will turn 5 in Kindergarten, provided they turn 5 before July 31 of that year.

The Classroom Dynamics Dilemma

This choice can have a profound impact on your child’s classroom experience, not only during their Kindergarten year but also in the years to come. Picture this scenario: at the beginning of term 2 of Kindergarten, around the end of April, a 4-year-old may find themselves learning and socialising in a classroom alongside 6-year-olds. This large age gap between peers has the potential to create developmental disadvantages for the younger students. Whilst early on this may not seem like such a leap, it’s later on in life where the gap becomes more noticeable.

Skip forward to a year 10 classroom during the same term, a 14-year-old might be interacting with 16-year-olds. The influences on a 14-year-old may encourage them to grow up faster and be exposed to certain things they may not be exposed to until a little older.

As your child progresses through school, the age gap can become more pronounced, affecting their emotional and social interactions and overall confidence. This age difference is a crucial factor to consider when deciding when your child should start school. To understand its significance, imagine removing the preschooler from the equation and placing a teenager in it.

The Impact of Emotional and Social Maturity

It’s essential not to underestimate the influence of your child’s emotional and social maturity on their educational and personal development. While it’s impossible to predict the exact type of teenager your preschooler will become, we know that the teenage years are complex and challenging in many ways. The older they are when they navigate social connections, tackle curriculum, and make decisions about their future, the better equipped they will be. Studies show that students who are held back and commence Kindergarten at 5 years old are less likely to repeat a grade, are more emotionally and socially mature, and are more able to create positive relationships, feel confident in being the class leader and thrive in formal school settings.

At Heritage House Childcare & Early Learning Centres, we prioritise your child’s development and well-being in a play based environment. We encourage you to consider your child’s unique needs and maturity level when making the decision about their school starting age.
