IS YOUR CHILD READY FOR SCHOOL? A PARENT’S GUIDE TO SCHOOL READINESS

August 6, 2026

Choosing when to send your child to school is a significant decision for every parent. As each child is unique in their development, it can be difficult to decide when a child is ready physically, socially, emotionally and cognitively for the big transition of starting school.

During the preschool years, children experience significant growth in all areas of development. From words to big emotions, all small milestones help shape a child’s future. These important foundations all support children as they continue to learn and grow.

Each child develops in their own time, and understanding the key measures to assess your child’s readiness for this important transition can be overwhelming; that’s where we come in. In this blog, we’ll discuss the benchmarks to consider when deciding on the age of transition to a formal school environment.

At Heritage House Early Education, we’re here to support every family, no matter their child’s developmental phase. From important holistic development and age dynamics to emotional maturity, we’ll dive deep into the key topics to assist parents in this important decision-making process.

Understanding the School Starting Age Window

When examining your child’s school readiness, it’s essential to recognise the age dynamics that will shape their children’s first years of schooling. The current age structure in NSW provides parents with an 18-month window to enrol children in their first year of school. This means that all children must be enrolled in Primary school in the year they turn 6.

For parents with children born from July 1st to December 31st, the choice is clear-cut. Their child will start school at age 5 and turn 6 during their first year of formal education. However, for parents with children born between January 1st and July 31st, there’s a choice to make about whether your child will have a one- or two-year age gap from their peers.

Most Private, Independent and Public school principals recommend starting Primary school no earlier than the year in which a child turns 6.

This vital decision can significantly impact your child’s educational journey and social development, which is why it is crucial to assess your child’s maturity to determine how they will thrive in a new school environment.

The Classroom Dynamics Dilemma

One of the biggest considerations when deciding your child’s schooling age is the peers that will shape their holistic development. If you decide to choose to enrol your child earlier, there can be an 18-month age gap between your child and their peers.

To put this into perspective, by the time Term 2 of Kindergarten comes around, a child could be 4 years old yet find themselves learning alongside 6-year-olds. This large age gap among peers can create developmental disadvantages for younger students; as your child progresses through school, the age gap can become more pronounced. For example, a 14-year-old may find themselves navigating the same social environment as 16-year-olds, and a 16-year-old may be influenced by 18-year-olds. Providing your child with an additional year in a long day care setting allows them to develop the confidence, maturity and foundational skills needed to engage with these stages at the appropriate time, rather than being exposed to older expectations & pressures too early.

Therefore, if your child has not reached a significant level of maturity, this gap can significantly affect their social interactions and their confidence in their learning environments. This age difference is a crucial factor to consider when deciding when your child should start school.

The Impact of Emotional and Social Maturity

Throughout this decision-making process, it is vital to evaluate your child’s maturity in relation to their education and personal development. It’s impossible to predict the unique person your child will become. However, we know that as they grow older, they will navigate a variety of social connections and tackle more complex educational curricula.

Letting your child start their schooling at later stages of 5 or 6 allows them to further mature and be better equipped to handle new experiences throughout their holistic development. Studies show that students who have an extra year of early learning and commence Kindergarten in the year they turn 6 are less likely to repeat a grade, more emotionally and socially mature, and build positive relationships in their formal school settings.

The Benefits of an Extra Year of Early Learning

There are significant benefits to letting your children experience an extra year of early learning. Play-based (or as we like to call it ‘inquiry-led’) learning is known as one of the most important ways to support children in developing the skills needed for their educational futures.

Letting your child experience an extra year of early learning gives their cognitive development a major boost. They become more proficient in literacy and numeracy concepts, develop independence and an understanding of responsibility more quickly, and build greater initiative within their school learning.

They are also more likely to be socially mature & confident than their peers, with greater emotional regulation and patience. These qualities not only help them begin schooling more confidently but also support them in becoming natural leaders within their new educational and social environments.

School Readiness: It’s More Than Academics

School readiness encompasses much more than academic capabilities. As children approach the ages when they are ready for Kindergarten, parents should begin to assess a child’s school readiness not only through their academic skills but also through their emotional resilience and independence to explore new experiences.

During these transitions, focusing on encouraging curiosity and problem-solving skills will prepare them for challenges they may face in a formal school setting. Through supporting these foundational areas, you’re giving your child the tools they need to thrive in school and in life.
