THE GIFT OF READING! WHY WE CELEBRATE BOOK WEEK AT HERITAGE HOUSE

August 3, 2023

Embracing the gift of reading is a cornerstone of early childhood education, and Book Week provides the perfect opportunity to promote literacy, enhance imagination, celebrate diversity, and make reading fun in line with the principles of the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF). By exposing children to new books and creating literacy-rich environments, we aim to support their language and communication skills in engaging and fun ways, setting them up for the best possible learning journey.

Promoting Literacy

At Heritage House, we understand that literacy is the foundation for all learning. From the youngest toddlers to the curious pre-schoolers, our educators use age-appropriate books to engage children in interactive storytelling sessions as part of our overall programming. During Book Week especially, books are displayed and focused on in our services to promote literacy and literature with the children. By highlighting the significance of reading as a foundational skill for learning and personal growth, we aim to promote literacy across our Heritage House families.

Enhancing Imagination and Creativity

Books have the unique ability to transport readers to different worlds, spark imagination, and inspire creativity. During Book Week, our educators carefully select books to read that transport children to magical realms, distant planets, and imaginary worlds. Through our Book Week parades, we encourage our children to explore various genres and stories that stimulate their minds. The EYLF acknowledges the significance of play-based learning, where children explore and make sense of their world through imaginative play. Our children can be anything they want to be during Book Week!

Celebrating Diversity

Books are a treasure trove of diverse perspectives, cultures, and experiences. During Book Week we showcase literature from different authors and backgrounds, fostering a greater understanding and appreciation of diversity. Diversity is at the heart of EYLF, promoting inclusive practices that respect and celebrate each child’s unique background and culture. By reading stories that reflect the rich tapestry of our community, we help children develop empathy, understanding, and appreciation for others.

Making Reading Fun

By making reading enjoyable and interactive, we empower children to be active participants in their learning journey. During Book Week we organise exciting activities like book parades, where children dress up as their favourite book characters, creating an atmosphere of enthusiasm and excitement. We also hold interactive storytelling sessions with props and puppets to make the stories come alive.

Ultimately, Book Week serves as a reminder of the gift of reading and why it needs to be incorporated into our daily programming. By focusing on promoting literacy, enhancing imagination, celebrating diversity, and making reading fun, we hope to instil a lifelong appreciation for reading in all those who participate in our Heritage House Book Week celebrations.
